A Little History:

After the 30-year (1618-1648) religious war was fought in Germany, medieval piety and folk art combined to bring about new forms of burning incense.  Christian and Germanic customs together with superstition made people think the evil spirits of the longest nights of the year could be driven away by noise and light.  After the evil spirits had left the house, fine incense was burnt to bless the home.  The smoking men, which were carved and turned from wood, were born in the Miriquidi Forest, later known as the Erzgebirge.

Kings and emperors have had incense among their most precious gifts for five thousand years.  Also connected with religion, in Matthew 2, verse 11, the Bible tells of the journey of the Three Wise Men to Bethlehem..." and opened their treasures and offered Him gold, frankincense and myrrh".  Even today, people write a symbol representing C+M+B* in chalk over their front door as a magic spell to keep evil spirits away.

* C+M+B - Caspar, Melchior, and Balthasar are the three Wise Men who journeyed to Bethlehem.
